Review of Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) by Lisa B — 28 Mar 2010
First off, tackling a subject such as this is not only difficult but also is guaranteed to offend someone and raise a firestorm of controversy. Credit must be given to all that participated in this production as it raises important questions about responsibility, civic duty and culpability.
The screenplay is well written and provocative. The cast is excellent, with the performances by Schell and Widmark particularly good. I am not sure that Tracy deserved an Oscar nod here, nor Garland or Clift.
To me, knowing the personal stories of Clift and Garland it was very shocking seeing them in their respective portrayals. And though the film was nominated for cinematography, the camera movement to many times was static and drew me out of the film.
Great film though, important film.
