Review of Judge Dredd (1995) by Caesar M — 19 Sep 2012
Back in 1995 Sylvester Stallone introduced the character of Judge Dredd to audiences and fans alike on the big screen which left both equally enraged. This led to Judge Dredd receiving harsh criticism and after my viewing of it, it's not as bad people make out to be. In fact, Judge Dredd actually fits the so bad it's good category which makes viewing it all the more enjoyable.
Judge Dredd follows the title character as he must stop his evil clone brother from creating an evil army of clones. Now this action movie is filled with cliches and stupid moments, but that's part of the fun also. Some plot points will make you laugh, like how these Judges who serve the law and protect the citizens must forever roam a wasteland once they retired. Another moment that will make some laugh is the opening narration by James Earl Jones who's famous for the voice of Darth Vader as he talks about an "elite force". Finally my favorite scene is the climax which takes place on top of the Statue of Liberty (because apparently law enforcement buildings have those in the future) in a rainy storm and seconds later it goes to bright sunny day. When it comes to the acting department this movie is known for its bad acting. Especially from Stallone, if you thought you had a hard time understanding Bane voice in The Dark Knight Rises understanding what Stallone says is completely worst. It also doesn't help take his character seriously when he has his cup outside of his costume. The acting might be hard, but it's enjoyable kind of bad acting, especially how over the top they say "Law" every time. Unfortunately this movie suffered from one miscasting, the unfunny Rob Schneider who lives despite getting shot by robot and somehow didn't bleed to death despite having to wait an entire day to get medical attention. Judge Dredd is not a good movie, but it does entertain from poor production values which counts for something.
Judge Dredd by no means a good movie, but its also not as bad as people make it out to be good. It might be cliche with bad acting, but it perfectly fits the so bad it's good category. If you like bad movies for there comedic values go checkout Judge Dredd, everybody else is probably better looking for it remake.
