Review of Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) by Charles R — 31 Oct 2012
Ju-on is a bastion of Japanese Horror, and still stands tall today. It is suspenseful from the start and builds until it's finish. For the entire course of the film, there is always a feeling that something isn't quite right, and the film never takes a break from it's eerie nature.
Ju-on utilizes techniques that most horror movies do not use in our current decade. This is the use of the imagination, by using haunting sound effects and suspense to scare you rather than jump scares (you don't even get a good look at the antagonist for the majority of the film).
Although Ju-on is in most cases a haunting horror, it's not without its flaws. There isn't much in terms of plot (its usually just 'person winds up in a house') and the characters are pretty underdeveloped.
A lot of the time, I had trouble feeling for some of the characters, which penalized the scares of some points in the movie. Other than that, Ju-on is a haunting experience and is certainly worth a try for it's throwback to traditional horror.
