Review of Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) by Andrew D — 17 Mar 2013
Before Sarah Michelle Gellar dared to enter the Saeki house, there was Ju-On: The Grudge. This incredibly creepy film follows six different people that are being haunted by the spirit of Kayako Saeki. Once they set foot in the house, they're doomed to be followed by the murderous spirit until they die.
Unlike the American remake, Ju-On tells its story in six interconnected tales which I felt was a smart move. This way, the mystery stays alive throughout the 90 minute runtime, adding to the creep factor.
The thing with the stories is that they start out not really too scary, but the further you get into the film the scarier it gets. The final act in the film is by far the scariest as the ghosts are closing in on poor Rika and the mystery is close to being revealed.
The main problem with this film is that it starts out REALLY slow in the beginning. It takes a while to get the ball rolling and for actual scares to come about. Fortunately if you have the patience, it will all pay off when the credits roll because the ending of this movie is terrifying.
In the end, Ju-On: The Grudge is a fun and creepy little foreign horror movie. It takes a while to get to the scares, but you will leave pretty frightened by the film's end.
