Review of Joy (2015) by Kean Hooi T — 09 Jan 2016

Like what I?ve told my friend, Adeline, ?A good drama beats everything else any day of the week.? and it?s true. Joy is amazing! It?s a story of hope, love and perseverance inspired by the true stories of daring women. That?s as much as you?d need to know prior to seeing it. The key is to truly surrender yourself to the magic in Joy.

Don?t see it as an empowering show for just women in the world of enterprising but try and see it as a message that calls out to everyone to rise and really realise our dreams. Yes, it?s a comedy in some ways but that doesn?t mean we can?t believe in the effects that the message has on us. I was tired and annoyed by the heat throughout the whole day. Watching Joy made me wanted to get on my feet and start dancing. It?s just moments after moments of spiritual uplifting-ness.

If you?re a fan of David O. Russell or Jennifer Lawrence, you?re bound to stay and love Joy. I LOVE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK SO MUCH and the moment I watch Joy, I know I?m going to thoroughly enjoy the experience too. Wonderful directing and excellent performance from the cast, Joy is absolutely captivating right from the start. You will feel right at home with all those familiar faces that you usually see in David?s film. Sure, I agree with Adeline that it has some cliché moments, especially the scene where Joy had to cut her hair short due to reasons that I?m not telling you here. These are nothing compared to the joyfulness and empowerment that you get from watching it.

I think that what David did with Silver Linings Playbook and Joy is a brilliant formula for a drama. It can?t go wrong and it doesn?t get old. Joy is quite contained when it comes to the language used and I?m fairly surprise to see the ?M? rating over here in Australia. The lack of subtitles for the Spanish lines can leave the audience a bit clueless but I do think that?s the intention of the filmmaker so that we feel the same as the other characters in those scenes who didn?t understand what they have heard.

Seeing this at the start of the year is utterly perfect and it definitely helps in renewing my hope and passion in the things I?d like to pursue in life. So I sincerely hope that when you watch this movie, you would enjoy and appreciate it as much as my friend and I did.
