Review of Joy (2015) by Donovan M — 10 Jan 2016
David O. Russell directs Jennifer Lawrence in his Slice-of-American life story about the woman who invented the miracle mop. Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper are also back with Russell although there isn't enough of Cooper to make his presence worthwhile.
Joy is good, but like the last two David O. Russell movies, it feels like there is something missing. The audience connection to Joy feels superficial. You'll find yourself rooting for Joy to secede while wanting more of the cast of characters that surround her.
Characters like her reclusive mother, her cranky and pushy father, and her sister who turn on her as soon as Joy is knocked down. The movie from start to finish is all about Lawrence. If you love her, you'll love Joy.
