Review of Joy (2015) by David H — 11 Jan 2016
Found this a bit unsatisfying in the end. A laboured first half hour or so before it got to the real story, which was then told in a clumsy way, key plot points being almost glossed over. The last 15 minutes or so were cliched in presentation and verged on sycophantic in the characterisation of Joy herself (which made me wonder how much influence the real Joy Mangano, who is listed as an EP, had on the script).
Lawrence is good, but this film is much weaker than her previous collaborations with Russell.
