Review of Joy (2015) by James R — 17 Jan 2016
Came into this one with pretty low expectations because the trailer is not very clear at all what this film is about. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. Director David O. Russell once again teams up with Jennifer Lawrence and brings us Joy.
The film is about Joy (Jennifer Lawrence) a young lady who has quite the family. She has two kids and is divorced from her ex husband Tony (Edgar Ramirez) who happens to be living in her basement. Her mother Terry (Virginia Madsen) lives with her as well and just lays in bed all day and watches soap operas.
Her dad Rudy (Robert De Niro) recently just moved back in with them as well although he's separated from Terry. Joy's grandmother Mimi (Diane Ladd) is the one supporting person telling Joy she's destined for big things.
On top of all that Joy's half sister Peggy (Elisabeth Rohm) is super envious of Joy and is a real pain in the ass. Joy likes to invent things and after sometime develops a mop that can wring itself out.
Joy goes through trials and tribulations dealing with the cutthroat side of business and dealing with the craziness of her family. The film also stars Bradley Cooper as Neil Walker an executive for QVC that gives Joy a chance.
The movie has a nice pacing to it and although it's a drama overall, it still has some very comedic moments. Jennifer Lawrence has a great performance here and you really see her character grow. I'd say if any of this has interested you go out and give it a look and ignore the terrible trailer!
