Review of Joy (2015) by Philippe D — 05 May 2016
Biopic about QVC pioneer and inventor Joy Mangano, who invented the self-wringing mop, and eventually other things as well, and went from broke with a complicated family life to being a rich business person.
It's the classic rags to riches story. Is it great? Not really. I mean, it's good, but I am starting to feel like the focus in movies on creating the "strong female character" is beginning to make the characters feel less real, a little more hollow.
Jennifer Lawrence is a good actress, but I just felt like something was missing. Oddly this movie was almost sold like some kind of crime thriller. Knowing nothing of the true story going in, having only seen the trailers.
..I assumed this was about some broke housewife who's marriage ends and she gets in with the mob or something. This movie's trailers were totally unrepresentative of the movie I saw. But beyond that.
..average bio-pic.
