Review of Journey to the West (2014) by Tim R — 18 Aug 2013
I couldn't get into this film, every time I tried it switched gears to another style or genre or it threw some hideous CG on the screen and I went back to not caring. At times it tries to be a horror film but it's not scary, it wants to be a comedy but other than Miss Duan's attempts to get Xuan Zang's attention I didn't find it very funny.
Even the fights generally devolve into bad CG. I get that Stephen Chow as a director is all over the place like this but in this case it continually hindered my enjoyment of the film. Even the entrance of the Monkey King just brought on some boring CGI's fights and a wasted emotional moment since the film did nothing to really sell me on the relationship meaning what the Zang said it did.
