Review of Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) by Anna H — 31 Dec 2012
Taking the idea that Jules Verne's novel was an actual account of an expedition is a neat way of retelling this classic adventure set in modern times and it kind of works here in this family orientated film.
Brendan Fraser makes a good lead with his characteristically wide-eyed delivery. There are enough special effects to make it a visual spectacle but, to be honest, they're all scenarios we've seen before and probably done with a little more finesse.
Also, this was made for the full-on 3D experience and it shows, with the cast taking every possible opportunity to poke things out of the screen at you which can become a little wearing when being viewed on a TV.
Whilst the 1959 James Mason and Pat Boone version of this tale has rightly became something of a classic movie, this 2008 version is unlikely to become so. However it is diverting enough and will keep the kids amused during the school holidays.
