Review of Jonah Hex (2010) by Spyros T — 25 Jan 2013
This had a lot of potential for a funny, campy film, but these types of films are hard to balance just right. In the beginning it may look like a fun "turn off the brain" or "so bad it's good" kind of film but it isn't.
It mostly tries to be grim but comes across as laughable. There are FIVE different people getting writing or story credits. I'm guessing the three of them are heavy drinkers and the other two are Neveldine & Taylor, the equivalent of a 5 year old with ADD.
Despite being barely over eighty minutes long, this is one of the most heavily padded films I've ever seen. For the first half hour it isn't actually that bad. It's stupid but enjoyable. Then they simply run out of script we end up seeing the same scenes over and over.
In the beginning Jonah Hex's family is murdered. Later we see it one more time in slow motion, then again towards the end, and finally one more time, edited into the middle of a fight scene. What's the purpose of this? I guess this is how they managed to make the film over one hour long.
There are some really good actors in this film (not that you could tell from this film though). The names of Brolin, Malkovich, Shannon, Arnett, Fassbender and Reddick would prepare me for a decent flick, not something abysmal as this.
I still can not figure out, how the producers convinced all of them to be in this film. And I'd like to know why Michael Shannon gets billed pretty high on the list and has a single line and screentime of about 5 seconds and yet, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has a pretty substantial scene and is uncredited.
