Review of Jonah Hex (2010) by Kevin R — 19 May 2011
Get lost or get dead.
Jonah Hex fought in the Civil War and disobeyed a direct order to burn down a hospital. His actions lead to the indirect death of his commander's son. The commander obtains revenge by killing Jonah's wife and child. Jonah initially believes the commander died before he could extract revenge; however, when rumors surface the commander is alive, Jonah begins a mission to find the commander.
"Hey Hex, what happened to your face?".
"I cut myself shaving. What happened to yours?".
Jimmy Hayward, director of Horton Hears a Who, delivers Jonah Hex. The storyline for this picture had potential but was delivered in a frustrating fashion. The action scenes were solid but the cinematography was inconsistent and awkward. The acting was also inconsistent and the cast includes Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, and Will Arnett.
"Once a coward always a coward.".
This film isn't bad just because of Megan Fox's acting. I mean, Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean overcame Orlando Bloom's inability to act. The first Transformers had Megan Fox and people seemed to like it fine. People keep watching Shia LaBeouf movies. This film suffers from an identity issues. Was this a science fiction, horror drama, or western? This movie felt like a combination of Wild Wild West and Constantine, but not as good as either film. I'm not sure what direction Hayward was going with this film, but it didn't work.
"Talking to dead ain't natural.".
Grade: C-.
