Review of Johnny Mnemonic (1995) by Andrew A — 28 Jul 2018
An unusual idea at the time and a film that should have been a whole lot better.
This film is just plain bad. It is not even a guilty pleasure trip. The biggest problem here is the direction. It sucks all the fun out of the movie and although a lot of people blamed Keanu's acting, I think it is all from behind the scenes.
Keanu Reeves would go on to shine in a similar movie, namely the Matrix, so he can't take all the blame.
Other than Henry Rollins and Dolph Lundgren, who is wasted as a scary villain, the acting is poor throughout. The sets look cheap and the film has no identity. It is trying to be something it is not from start to finish and is a hodge-podge of ideas from better Sci-fi films.
