Review of Johnny Guitar (1954) by Mikko K — 26 Aug 2009
Director Nicholas Ray's western melodrama is a cut above the usual old-fashioned horse opera due to the psychological depth of its characters and strong performances from Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden.
The themes and subtext explored are years ahead of its time. It gets off to a strong start, and though it isn't really able to sustain the tension and intensity of the first 20 minutes - at some point it becomes a more conventional western - it's still a minor classic worth checking out.
