I first read the book, and walked the halls of the Army hospital in '68, when soldiers from Viet Nam lined the wards and hallways. These two things created my identity as a lifelong pacifist. I advise that you first read the book.
If you want to know if this book made an impact, just know it was "banned" for a few decades.
