Review of Johnny Got His Gun (2008) by Dani F — 07 Apr 2010
The movie stars Joe. Kind of a cruel twist of fate, when he is sent to bury an enemy soldier "Because death has a dignity of it's own" he is hit by a shell that leaves him trapped inside of a broken body.
It is really amazing that these doctors would be willing to keep a person in this shape alive especially given during most of the movie they think he is brain dead. This is a really sad movie as Joe cannot communicate with anybody as he is trapped within his own mind.
You see him go through flashbacks of his childhood, along with the days before he enlisted. Some of these figures like his girl friend come to him in visions to torture him about leaving to fight the war, as well as when he lost his father's best fishing rod.
There are parts with Donald Sutherland as a rather inept Jesus Christ as he turns to his father to help him. The ending is pretty damn heart breaking as after the movie was done I almost had to cry. This movie has finally come out on region 1 d.
V.d and I cannot recommend this movie enough. Of course since Metallica would use the movie footage for their music video "One" it is included in the special features. Watch this movie immediately.
