Review of Johnny English Strikes Again (2018) by Cinema With C — 01 Dec 2018
Johnny English Strikes Back is inexplicably the third movie of a trilogy I genuinely only just remembered the second's name of. And one I never saw. Therefore, this was an interesting watch.
It wasn't a particularly great watch, that's for sure. Rowan Atkinson returns as the Barclaycard advert-turned-movie character in a film full of jokes, but unfortunately a very slim minority of them actually being funny.
The strength of the film lies exactly where you expect. Much like in the past, Atkinson is one of the greatest physical comedians, and while he's not on top form here, it still elicit chuckles. For when it hits, his timing is perfect.
It' just a shame the material and surrounding cast don't elevate the work. Except for Emma Thompson, but really, can she ever do wrong?
Johnny English Strikes Back is nothing memorable, Hell, it's amazing a third movie was made when the second feels like it was watched by enough people to count on one hand. I'll always appreciate a sendup to classic Bond, but this is far from a classic.
It generates few responses, but when it does, it reminds you why Atkinson tries.
Because once upon a time, nobody did it better.
