Review of Johnny English Strikes Again (2018) by Jacob B — 26 Nov 2018
For me, this movie is the best out of the three Johnny English movies...not that I ever held the last two movies in high regard to begin with. I feel that Johnny English here is less idiotic than in the last two movies.
He's not too bright but his ineptitude doesn't stand out as much as it did in Reborn. Could largely be because his assistant from the first film Bough's back! Yay! I didn't hate Daniel Kaluuya in the last movie but it's clear that he was a replacement for Bough who only made it as far as a deleted scene.
Rowan Atkinson's physical performance is what makes this movie. Even funnier is how all his heroics are mostly by accident leading to wacky buffoonish pratfalls. My only criticism is a feeling of deja vu with the sequences set in France.
I know his name's "Mr. Bean" not "Rowan Atkinson" but considering that Atkinson himself is a bit grumpy about only being known as Bean, you'd think he'd say something about some of the gags being too similar to Mr.
Bean's Holiday. Johnny English Strikes Again won't appeal to everyone but if you have tastes similar to mine when it comes to Rowan Atkinson, this movie might be a fun little bit of escapism.
