Review of John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) by Peter F — 22 Mar 2017
While the original John Wick had a gracefully one-two-punch simplicity to it that made it a surprise critical favorite, this sequel trumps it on every level. Director Chad Stahelski once again gives the film a sense of lighting and style that automatically sets it above other studio released genre films, but it's further augmented by being more creative with the action sequences.
Post-video-game in terms of viscera, yet also balletic in a way that's inherent to John Woo flicks, John Wick: Chapter 2 is bone crunching-ly effective, and the brutal kills never cease to impress.
Incorporating lush sets, seamless sound editing, and sly use of artistic decor (the climax is a gun battle in a modern art gallery. 'nuff said.), the film couldn't be any more beautiful either, and it even has more nuanced character moments than the first one.
Even though we're only two months into the year, it's extremely doubtful we'll be getting a better action film in 2017 than John Wick: Chapter 2, and it's also safe to predict that Chapter 3 is going to be even better still!
