Review of John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) by Average W — 08 Jan 2018
Honestly, I did not like the first movie and believe it to be overrated. The sequel still had no weight of threat. They say a story is only as good as its antagonist and yet both "John Wick" chapters are lacking in that department. Keanu Reeves is playing just another overpowered "Neo" that is having everything that COULD go wrong go absolutely wrong for convenient entertainment. In fact, they reference "having a bad night" multiple times for irony.
And yet, the sequel dipped me into a very rich world...
I won't lie, I was entertained through this entire movie. The movie was cliche and there were countless "convenient reload" times and every fight just rehashed the same choreograph and yet I was having fun, I wanted to know more. This sense of "honor among thieves" and the "professional courtesy" among such a dirty profession captivated me. It sort of creates this world where you're drawn into.
While there are plenty of critiques you can make Keanu Reeves does a stellar performance and I was so entranced by the fleshed out dark-society that the hours flew by in an instant. It is great fun to watch and always had me wanting to know more. The ending really leaves it open for a third movie and I for one cannot wait.
