Review of John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) by Zissou M — 07 Jun 2017
Having cut my teeth on action movies like Legend of the Drunken Master, this watered-down pablum with zero character development and no discernible plot or purpose just simply does not cut the mustard. This film is completely devoid of any soul, and lacks even a single line of quotable, memorable dialogue.
If every other person in this universe is some kind of highly trained assassin, why is it only Wick seems to understand the concept of the head shot? Super high tech body armor exists, but not Teflon coated bullets or armor piercing rounds. Oh and let's not forget that telephones haven't seemed to evolve past the rotary dial stage.
About all you can say for this movie is that it's technically well made. All the shots are in focus, and there is even one stand-out shot of Wick's Mustang jumping sideways out of the warehouse in the beginning. But literally, that's the only impressive shot in the entire picture. The rest of the film is comprised entirely of cliches and over-done tired tropes.
If mind-blowing action is what you're after, I recommend you give this a pass and go rent a true action classic with some truly memorable characters like Rumble in the Bronx instead.
