Review of John Wick (2014) by Lenny R — 25 Sep 2015
The only real problem with this movie is Keanu, who makes the thoroughly impressive action moves, which he reportedly put in a huge amount of work to get right, look as rehearsed as they did in The Matrix.
In that movie I put it down to his having the moves downloaded into his brain, and therefore lacking the muscle memory that comes with years of training. Here he lacks that excuse, and looks to be concentrating on what the next step in the sequence is, rather than making it look fresh and improvised.
His growly delivery of the lines is as flat as ever, the only convincing moment that when he is overcome with emotion and screams his dialogue. I don't understand how Reeves has gained a reputation for being good at this stuff.
I personally have never seen it. He's good as Ted Logan. He was great in Sam Raimi's The Gift, as a redneck wife-beater. He should leave this stuff to Jason Statham. Otherwise, great movie.
