Review of John Wick (2014) by Alex T — 30 Jan 2016
It's at times entertaining, at times visually impressive, and clearly has some thought and filmmaking ability behind it, nevertheless its effect is a 'Taken' like rehash of cliched action, corny and too-much dead pan dialogue from Reeves, mixed in with bizarre cameos from the likes of Willem Dafoe and Ian McShane.
In the end, the critical response has been blurred by Keanu Reeves' return to action films, and there seems to have been a concerted effort to say 'that means I like this film no matter what'.
Maybe I'm doing it down, and it will develop a cult following, much like 'Taken' did in the years subsequent, but it is a B-movie made to watch, endulge in too much grotesque and unnecessary violence and then dispose of.
They will do a sequel, there is no maybe about it, but I doubt i'll be rushing to see it.
