Review of John Wick (2014) by Zeroundead 1 — 31 Dec 2018
John Wick is directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and follows John Wick (played by Keanu Reeves), seeking revenge on some people who "Stole his car, and killed his fucking dog.". I got the pleasure of watching this on 4K the other week and went in excepting a classic, revenge story with fun kills.
What I got though was an emotional, beautiful, awesome, and intriguing film about loss and tragedy, with an awesome underground society of assassins plot points in it. Now, let's start parading this film.
First of all, the lighting and cinematography. This films lighting is amazing, so much color and pop to it, really helps make this film feel unique. Also, the cinematography, especially the New York stuff is amazing.
One of my film pet peeves is not using your location to your advantage but this film made New York feel like a character, not a setting, and a lot of that has to do with the way they shot it, using a lot of aerial shots so we can see just how unique it is, jumping from the cities to the rural areas.
Also, the film sets up this separate world of assassins living underground with there own rules and such. It's very intriguing, they don't talk about it a lot or explain it so your left filling in the questions in your head.
Also, when the marketing said it was Keanu Reeves best since "Matrix", they weren't lying. His performance in this film is perfect, no one else could play this part but him, his tone, his look, his dedication all adds up to a worthy contender in the action stars list.
All in all, I'd say this is the best revenge story of all time and one of the best modern action movies.
