Review of John Q (2002) by Jacob C — 17 Dec 2010
This film passed a lot of people by, it didn't seem to get a lot of press at the time of its release; and hasn't seemed to have had a wide DVD release either. I actually saw it at the cinema about 7 or 8 years ago and have wanted to see it again since.
Denzel Washington is absolutely superb in a hostage based hospital scenario that is designed to tug at the heartstrings. The tag line is 'what lengths would you go to for your child.....' and Cassavetes piles on the pathos.
It is Denzel Washington who makes this film though, his performance is captivating and I wonder how much scrutiny the film would stand up to without him in the eponymous role. This film is definitely worth seeing, despite the panning it got from critics - I am keen it doesn't fade into obscurity for all time and urge you if you've never heard of it to go and get it, buy it, watch it and enjoy it.
