Review of John Q (2002) by Dave L — 19 Jan 2012
"John Q" is a movie that people want to love but it is so full of bombastic propaganda related to healthcare that the audience feels like they are being beaten over the head. Some of the script is so simplistic and absurd (John Q says he is praying for an act of God and then we see a young woman killed in a car crash who would become his injured son's donor.
Really?). Having said that, the acting skills of Denzel Washington make this worth a watch. He almost single-handedly saves this movie from the scrap pile. The filmmakers hearts are also in the right place and there are some very moving family drama scenes.
This really could have been a great movie with a better script and tighter direction.
