Review of John Q (2002) by Terry W — 01 Apr 2009
My emotions are touched each time I watch this movie. This realistic film displays one great example of an ongoing issue in our United States of America. Denzel Washington as usual represents such a realistic character in the person of John Q.
Archibald, who is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He is placed in a position to hold an ER room hostage at gunpoint while demanding a heart for his nine year old son, so that he will not die. The more I watch this film, the deeper the issues I find in it.
Most recently I found the ethical issues in HMOs which is casually mentioned in the film. It is amazing to me that the nurse exposes the doctor and points out the reason that they are a part of this situations is because of doctors like him.
Doctors who receive huge bonuses through HMO coverage but work in hospitals that do not provide adequate healthcare because of financial situations. This film brings to light the fact that there are great ethical issues in medicine and they lead to much more dangerous and potentially fatal circumstances.
