Review of John Dies at the End (2013) by Jordan V — 06 Apr 2013
"John Dies at the End" is bat-s&@$ crazy. Straight up. It's very rare in a film for a door-knob to turn into a penis, but when it does, hilarity is sure to ensue.
JDATE is based on a book of the same name; A book I'm a HUGE fan of. My expectations were very high for this, and were they met? No. But looking at it on it's own merits, the movie version of JDATE holds up very well, and will easily become a cult classic.
David Wong gets the opportunity to explain his strangely horrifying life events involving a alien drug nicknamed 'Soy Sauce' to Arnie; A journalist looking to publish the tale. All the things explained in this story I will leave for you to watch.
The acting is pretty good, but characters like Amy feel severely underwhelming. The two best are certainly Chase Williamson (David Wong) and Paul Giamatti (Arnie). Their constant banter, and Giamatti's shock to the events unfolding, is super believable, even when the effects might not be...
The directing is fantastic. One of my favorite scenes is in the police station when Williamson's character is starting to feel the drug's effects; Quick shots of his face are shown, each bearing a different expression, and perfectly edited into a cool montage of getting high. The CG effects range from cool to downright awful, especially the main villain Korrok. Never before have I been taken out of a scene because of an awful effect like this!
The good news is, the movie is so damn funny and well written that you can pull through, and overall, I can't recommend it enough. If you enjoy the book, you'll enjoy the movie. If you like weird, original, and funny movies, you'll probably enjoy this movie. If you like penis knobs, well, find some help.
