Review of John Dies at the End (2013) by Whitney B — 11 Dec 2013
Definitely a better movie than the reviews will lead you to believe, it suffers from what I call the "Homer Simpson effect" This movie has some moron characters in it. because said characters are stupid, the more dim witted viewers will assume the film itself is stupid. The subtext in this movie is brilliant, The acting more nuanced than it has a right to be. None of the key actors fall short. a fantastic watch for the open minded. I took off that fifth star for several reasons, the special effects are 2002 era TV grade, And while that lends a certain humor at times, I do wish they were better. Also this movie is very clever, but I get the feeling the book is better. lastly there were several moments where I felt like I was watching a sequel to Slither.
In the end it's a better film than it's given credit for, due in large part to the fact that you have to "get it" to get it.
