Review of John Carter (2012) by Camilo E — 29 Mar 2014
Barsoom is the setting for this mysterious and wondrous adventure that sees former military captain John Carter transported to another world, and embroiled in a war between the planets inhabitants and a dark force that puts the Mars like planet on the brink of collapse.
Whilst this movie features beautiful visual effects and the wonder and awe you'd expect from a Walt Disney Picture, the real positive is Lynn Collins whose performance is filled with intensity and passion making you believe in her character Dejah Thoris who desperately needs a hero to save her from an arranged marriage with the sinister Matai Shang.
She looks the part, kicks ass in the action sequences and surprisingly, overshadows main character John Carter who is played by Taylor Kitsch in deep voice mode, he doesn't necessarily phone it in but he's similar to his performance in Battleship and X-Men Origins.
A box office disappointment yet receiving lukewarm critical feedback, this isn't the flop it's being named, John Carter benefits from powerful visuals, you really are immersed into the world of Barsoom, there's great imagination throughout especially seen with the set design and the look of the ships and planetary creatures, there's no denying it all looks great and with the story just in tow with the CGI this is a recommendable movie.
