Review of John Carter (2012) by Eric B — 26 Apr 2014
Based on it's disastrous box office performance, I was expecting this movie to be terrible but it wasn't. I wouldn't say it was good, but I'd rate it as slightly better than the majority of recent much more successful action blockbusters. Disney did a horrible job of marketing this movie esp.when they dropped the "of Mars" from the title. My dad was a huge fan of the hugely popular Edgar Rice Burroughs stories, but he's also 75! Since it wasn't adapted to film already like Tarzan, hardly anybody under 50 knows who John Carter is!
More than anything this movie's failure proves that you must either cast major stars or regurgitate a well known franchise. John Carter is sadly the final nail in the coffin for creativity and originality in the blockbuster genre for at least the next decade. You can forgot about a major studio green lighting an action film that doesn't headline a household name. Also don't expect to see any adaptations of anything that hasn't already been done a half dozen times. Instead you should look forward to Transformers V, Spiderman VII, Star Wars XII and a third remake of Total Recall...
