Review of John Carter (2012) by Brett C — 04 Mar 2016
John Carter is the first live-action film from Andrew Stanton who directed Pixar films like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, and it stars Taylor Kitsch in a Science Fiction film about John Carter who's a soldier in Earth, and when he killed someone and say the lines when he took the medallion of some sort, and got transported to Mars.
I was honestly shocked that when I first saw the movie, I loved the film, and I thought it was going to make a lot of money, but apparently it turns out to be a really big box office flop. When I watched it again on DirecTV after many years, maybe I was thinking that I was missing something, and after watching it, there were some problems that I had with it, but I still really enjoyed it.
Taylor Kitsch is really good as a main lead and his comedic timing is there which gives us some laughs from him. The beginning gets some pacing issues, until John Carter gets to Mars which the movie starts to get really good and the pacing gets better.
The Tharks look really cool, in fact, the special effects themselves look interesting and I just like the designs of the creatures in Mars. The action is great, especially the scene where John Carter and his dog goes against hundreds of enemies, which is honestly my favorite part of the film.
I know that some people find the plot of it very by the numbers here, even though it's based on a book series that are over a hundred years old, but I surprisingly find it a bit refreshing and it feels like it stands out of it.
The score by Michael Giacchino is always great to listen to, and I actually like the chemistry between Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins. The one problem that I had throughout the film, is that even though the heroes are developed great, the villains however, are a bit one-dimensional, and I honestly find their reasonings to be quite confusing.
With all that said though, I had a lot of fun watching John Carter, and I wished that it made a lot of money as I would actually go watch the sequels for this movie.
