The movie as a stand alone story is not a bad film, but when you make something based on a 100 year old book you should probably read that book. John carter touched on the source material for characters and some story points, but completely fails to tell the epic story that is told in A Princess of Mars.
Also adding parts of the second book to the movie made no sense what so ever. The Therns are mentioned in the first book but only briefly. And Matai Shang was never a part of A princess.
