Review of Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) by Jeff L — 13 Jul 2008
Man confronts imminent death in brief vignettes of modern life and absurd fantasy. Awesome script, awesome soundtrack, beautifully shot, earnest, weird, sometimes sad, i.e. as close to perfect as I think a feature-length can get.
A weird mishmash that anticipates many future Tom Hanks themes (terminal disease, Meg Ryan rom-com, getting lost in the South Pacific) but does those better and more sincerely than anything he did later in his career.
Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Ossie Davis, and the luggage salesman dude take turns completely stealing this movie.
