Review of Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) by Scott A — 23 Aug 2013
A Hanks movie I have always wanted to see, and finally have. Okay, I will admit Hanks and Ryan have an instant sort of chemistry in their films, but something was just missing with the plot.
I really liked Hanks here. He's totally likable and I can totally relate to his man stuck in a dead end job deal in the beginning of the film.
I wish Ryan didn't play every single major female role in the film, as it takes away from the third part she plays; the one that you see on all the covers. She also plays a co-worker in the beginning with Hanks, and then the her main character's half sister as well. Just the story didn't need a gimmick like that. But as the blonde, she IS super adorable.
I guess since the title suggests Joe will face a Volcano, I found it odd that that part is only the final twenty minutes! The story seemed to take it's time getting to that ending, and the island stretch needed far more time to make any sense. It got real cheesy in that section and seemed like the film was trying to find it's ending a tad too fast.
It's decent, but mostly cause of the lead actors, not really because of a great told story.
