Review of Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) by Francis M — 30 Jun 2014
The best movie ever made. Of course, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are great together, as always, but this movie also explores the value of life in a world where most of us at some point have just wanted to give up.
The symbolism of everything bad in the life of Joe Banks from his dead-end job and rundown apartment to the lightning that shipwrecks him and the volcano where he is to end his life seems always present, but the irony is that in accepting his death, Joe finds that life is best when lived well, regardless of the circumstances.
Add the comedy of Lloyd Bridges, Abe Vigoda, and Dan Hedaya, along with appearances by Ossie Davis, Robert Stack, and Carol Kane, and you end up with ... you guessed it ... the best movie ever made.
