Review of Joe Kidd (1972) by Ray D — 27 Sep 2008
Underrated Clint Eastwood Western, probably because it was a departure from the more proactive characters Clint had played before, involves a morally conflicted tracker roped into a land struggle between some Latinos and some greedy cattle barons.
The seeming lack of direction takes some patience--director John Sturges is seemingly missing in action, but the real pleasures are Elmore Leonard's Shambolic, conversational screenplay and Robert DuVall's cheery turn as the leader of the posse that tries to draft Clint to root out the Mexicans for them.
Not a great Western, but an interesting one, with both Eastwood and Duvall doing some good riffs on their established personas.
