Review of Joe Kidd (1972) by Randy R — 04 Jun 2010
A fairly mediocre Clint Eastwood western. Conventional, predictable plot. Dull, paint-by-numbers direction. Surprising, as the writer and director are experts in their fields. Written by Elmore Leonard, whose books have been turned into great movies like Jackie Brown, Get Shorty, 3:10 to Yuma. Directed by John Sturges, a man with a great action-drama/western resume, having directed movies like The Great Escape, Ice Station Zebra and The Magnificent Seven.
Eastwood does the best he can with the script and direction, as does Robert Duvall. Supporting cast are your usual stereotypical western wooden nondescripts.
Quite dull. Avoid, unless you like your westerns with no character depth, no intelligence, predictable plot and just mindless shooting.
