Review of Joe (2014) by Callum H — 11 Apr 2014
I noticed this film as it was promoted on RT. I purchased it on Amazon without realizing it is based on the book of the same title I read over fifteen years ago. Thirty seconds into the first scene I realized my oversight. The film delivers a glimpse into a Larry Brown novel spun of southern grit, violence, imperfection, and occasional redemption. Whether or not 'Joe' falls in the realm of 'Southern Gothic' I will leave to the academics.
Nicholas Cage delivers an excellent performance as does Tye Sheridan and a long list on unknowns.
If you are a Larry Brown fan or just enjoy dark southern drama you might give this film a go.
