Review of Joe (2014) by Mike S — 13 Jul 2014
I grew up in a situation eerily familiar to Gary in Mobile, Alabama. This movie not only touched on, but grabbed the atmosphere it was reaching for in near totality. I see some reviewers here saying it came off as fake. I guess it's one of those "you had to be there" type films. I have to say Cage was the worst actor in the movie, but that's not a jab because the rest of the cast was so convincing that I found myself tearing up at moments.
Great film, even better if you know the lay of the land it's coming from. If you haven't had these experiences or lived like/with/around them intimately, then you probably won't appreciate it as much.
