Review of Joe (2014) by Tim M — 02 Feb 2015
Nic Cage shows why he used to be an Oscar calibre actor here. You nearly forget who Nic Cage is. Joe is a fantastic slice of southern Americana. In a vein with Winter's Bone, and Mud, this is rural/small town America as it really is.
Joe is a man who struggles to keep himself under control, and is managing until he meets Gary, a 15yr old who wants a job and who works hard for every dollar. Only problem is, Gary's alcoholic father Wade.
Wade is pure evil, abusive, steals all Gary's money and has no interest in anything but drinking. The acting here is superb, and rendered even more poignant by the knowledge that Wade was played by a homeless man who died a few months after shooting.
..not a comfortable viewing experience, but an essential one. Highly recommended.
