Review of Joe (2014) by Matthew F. J — 18 Mar 2015
David Gordon Green is a prolific director. This time he returns with a beautiful story of a young man finding a father figure in Joe, a loner who works for a deforestation company. The film tells about redemption, friendship, violence and parenthood in a very unique and specific way.
One will inevitably be moved by the relationship that develops between Joe and his young recruit Gary. Their friendship is slowly maturing on screen and the film becomes a tale of survival for the young Gary who will learn to provide for himself and grow as his own person outside of the familial nightmare he's been forced to live because of his dad's alcoholism and troubled nature.
This is a great film, very well shot and photographed. Nicolas Cage is better than ever and young Ty Sheridan is once again showing how talented he is. Strong film.
