Review of Jodorowsky's Dune (2013) by Zurn Z — 05 Apr 2014
Jodorowsky assembled a team who, while they didn't end up making Dune, ended up influencing sci-fi films thereafter. Was great to see the concept art and the director's vision at least partly brought to life. And while it surely would have been at the very least an instant cult classic, it wouldn't quite have been Dune; Jodorowsky's vision was, as apparently with his other films, purely spiritual, brushing away the more scientific or political elements of the book (although there are spiritual parts to Dune, albeit firmly planted in science fiction). Although he was on good terms with Frank Herbert, Jodorowsky embraces the Jesus-like element of Paul, whereas the original's approach is far more cautionary and realistic.
But if nothing else it's a shame Jodorowsky didn't get the opportunity to make more fantastical films, he seemed good at finding and motivating talented artists. But at least he was able to express much of this via comics.
