Review of Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010) by Michael C — 20 Dec 2010
For the most part, a great documentary on a GROSSLY underrated comedic talent. Yes, Joan Rivers is known mainly for red carpet glitz and gossip, but if you've ever watched any of her stand-up, this woman is brutal, unapologetic, brash, and uncompromising, and that side of her was the most interesting part of the documentary.
The part of her going through the "Celebrity Apprentice" with her daughter Melissa, on the other hand, was complete fluff and frankly should have been cut out of what was otherwise an intriguing look at the life and career of a comedy icon.
Has a few weak moments such as that, but overall it shines a light on the real reason Joan deserves respect and accolade rather than the caricature she can sometimes be off the comedy stage.
