Review of Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) by Ed Y — 24 Apr 2012
The cinematography and soundtrack make this film an experience that may just leave you salivating. And I would be surprised, to sushi-non-lovers, if you aren't at least sushi-curious by the time the credits roll. But wait! Don't run if you have no interest in sushi--it's not only slow motion sushi-porn. You'll also learn of an unfamiliar Japanese culture. And then within that culture about the super-dedicated that devote their lives to perfecting their uncertain craft. Oh, and you'll even get a rare and animated glimpse into the Tsukiji Fish Market auctions!
Though the film may seem fragmented at times, and perhaps feel like it's on the cusp of ending too soon; it succeeds in painting the life of a man who has made sushi for over 75 years, and raises some interesting questions while doing it.
