Review of Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) by Mingzhi C — 25 Apr 2012
Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a remarkable documentary about sushi master Jiro Ono. At a still young 85 years old, Master Ono approaches his twilight years after a lifetime of the relentlessly perfecting his craft.
This is a wonderful portrait of a remarkable, determined, passionate and devoted man so utterly consumed by his craft as to know nothing else in his life. I was at once awestruck by his passion and in total admiration of this remarkable man. His elegance humanizes the strict discipline that each and every one of his sons and apprentices have to go through.
The movie not only paints a loving portrait of a great master but at the same time speaks volumes about the way things are done in Japan.
You are bewildered and awed at the amount of work it takes to produce something so simple, yet so elegant as a piece of sushi.
Wonderful movie! I dare you to come away and not be awestruck and salivating at the same time!
