Review of Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) by Eve B — 26 Jan 2013
It's a strange movie...one one hand it is a beautiful meditation on sushi, passion and skill developed over decades...on the other, it is a profile of people who have no interests, skills or life outside of sushi and who are really kind of sad when you think about it.
It's certainly a very Japanese kind of movie, in the sense that Jiro is SUPER old school and his sons are so far under his shadow they likely supper from vitamin D deficiency. Jiro's attitude on parenting and work are compatible with greatness but I couldn't help but realize that his reluctance to retire is as much because he loves work and he has nothing outside of work to retire to.
Worth seeing but I would certainly rent, stream or download vs buy.
