Almost a visual poem in its heavy focus on the landscape which can slow the pace down at times it is still an intersting character study. Its slowness at times means that instead of drawing you in so that you dont notice the time pass, you have to very much want to watch it, undermining it unecessarily.

The leads perhaps are better than the film as a whole, truly carrying it on their shoulders but Laura Linney couldn't make a bad film if she tried and gabriel byrne is also very strong in this piece which explores morality and social stigma not shying away from contreversy.

Although the pacing does affect the film alot, in addition to its being aestheticaly pleasing it does have a rather engaing story line. I only wish films like this were given a lot more publicity as this is a good one; although its a shame that much of the time the story is over shadowed by a landscape which in my opinion plays too much of an unjustified role in this otherwise uncomprimising family drama.

Pacing alone is what stops it being truly brilliant.
