Review of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001) by Curtis W — 22 Jan 2004
So of course I go from bad-mouthing movies like Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums for having precocious little brats as main characters to watching and enjoying this animated feature about a precocious little brat with a penchant for building rockets.
What I dug most about this was the weird time warped world that it is set in. It looks all 1950s - with the old cars and early jet fighters - but there are anomalies. The black girl character was the hippest little thing - with a discman stereo and a mobile phone. There was a remote control for the TV. But most of the high tech stuff was with Jimmy, who I guess constructed his own computers, DNA-entry door locks and robotic dog.
I also like Jimmy's parents - typical TV parents, with the goofball, do-nothing dad and the household chief mom, who fixes a mean plate of eggs and fixes the transmission on the car.
Patrick Stewart plays the king of an alien race of eggs. I had no idea it was him until I read the credits. Then I went back and watched again. Then I could hear it. Martin Short is the king's assistant and the pair make a great voice team.
